THE FREQUENCY OF ATTENTION
When breakout film director Andrew Patterson asked me to design the festival poster for The Vast of Night, I couldn’t resist. This science fiction film became a standout at Slamdance, earned a glowing endorsement from Steve Soderbergh, and eventually garnered attention from Amazon Studios. I helped make sure it was impossible to miss.

THE CHALLENGE
In a sea of film posters vying for attention, how do you stand out? My goal was to design a poster that captured the eerie tone of The Vast of Night while cutting through the noise of festival crowds and drawing attention to the film.
THE IDEA: THAT SOUND LOOKS STRANGE
Inspired by the strange audio frequency that takes over the town in The Vast of Night, I created a poster that showcased the eerie sound waves spiraling out from the radio tower, where much of the film’s action takes place. It was essential for the design to both reflect the plot and be visually striking.

MY ROLE
As the designer and creative director, I combed through an early screening of The Vast of Night to understand the key themes and visuals. I developed the concept for the poster, designed the layout and composition, and worked closely with the illustrator to bring the concept to life with a distinctive, otherworldly style.
